It seem like everyone is thinking about their career today. The one big factor for this is the economy. Like the old quote from James Carville, "It's the economy stupid." And that is one influence on our career that we have no control over. And that's ok; there are plenty of factors that are under our influence. And that is one important thing that you must keep in mind. You do have control over your career. And your career is YOUR responsibility.
So, what are some steps that you can take to manage your career? You need to realize that the rules have changed. Staying with one employer to get the "gold watch" is not very likely in today’s environment. Start thinking like a "free agent". Be on the lookout for opportunities. These opportunities may be with your present employer or a new employer. You need to take account of all of your skills, and I mean all of your skills. Even if it is the ability to repair a clock, fix a meal or if you can play the drums, make note of it. You never know when one of those skills may be transferred is some way with your career.
Make a list of things that you enjoy doing. Do you like talking with people; you could use that in sales, dealing with customer service or in training others with your present employer. Do you like writing; there are potentials for technical writers, copywriters, business writers, etc. The main point is to get your imagination run wild. Hey, it is your career! Put your skills and talents to work for you.
Look at Starbuck's; they started out selling spices, coffee makers, coffee beans and teas. They evolved into the Starbuck's that we know and love today.
There is nothing worse than being at the end of your career and having regrets about it. After all, it is your career; make it the best one possible.
