So, you have an interview appointment. You have done your research on the business. You have practiced your interview questions and you are confident that you can "ace" the interview. But wait, what about your image? Does your image say, "yes, I'm the one to do the job." If not, you may be sabotaging your interview and not even realize it. Numerous studies have demonstrated that the number one reason someone is rejected for a job is poor personal appearance.
To start off on your interview image, you need to take a good look at your clothing. For both men and women, a "classic" dark suit of a high quality wool bend creates a great base. A dark color like navy or dark charcoal grey is tough to beat. Above all, get the suit tailored to fit you. Nothing looks worse than a suit worn off the rack. An ill fitting suit will deal a death blow to your interview.
Adding a white or pale blue shirt or blouse provides a very professional look. Adding a color coordinated tie that has either diagonal strips (regimental style) or small dot pattern will top off the look. Women have greater variety to choose from. They can add a simple necklace, or a conservative scarf or just go with an open neck. Finish off the look with a basic black belt for men and black shoes that are polished. For women, unless you are very graceful, stay away from high heels that are over 3 inches. A nice closed toe pump provides a very professional look.
If you are out shopping for that new suit, and are not sure how to put it all together ask the associate that is helping you out, what looks best for an interview. One of my favorite stores is Brooks Brothers. If nothing else, take a trip to go window shopping there. I have found that they do a great job with their window displays and that can give you a good idea of what to look for when you commit to purchasing that one suit.
Before you put it all together, get a hair cut that compliments your features. Tell your barber or stylist that you have an interview and need to look your best. A good barber or stylist will take into consideration your hair texture and facial features when working their magic.
When putting the finishing touches on, the less "bling" the better. For women one pair of small simple earrings. Keep with just your wedding ring. Add a conservative watch, guys leave the dive watch on the dresser. Ladies, the less jewelry the better. Too much will distract you and the interviewer.
There you have it, some basic steps to get that professional look to win that interview. If you are still not sure check out working with an Interview Image Consultant.
